Back to School – Breakfast on the Run!

As the school year is in full swing thinking of what to feed your kids on the way out the door can be a challenge. Planning ahead and having items on hand is key to ensuring a healthy start to their day. Shop for key breakfast items such as:

  • Whole grain high fibre cereals
  • Fresh or frozen fruit
  • Yogurt
  • Whole wheat bread/bagels
  • Low fat cheese
  • Eggs
  • 100% Fruit Juice

A bonus for many kids in our province – they can enjoy breakfast with their friends at the Kids Eat Smart Club in their school! Either at home or at your Kids Eat Smart Clubs a Smoothie is always a great option for something healthy and delicious. Having these items on hand will make smoothies quick and easy to prepare:

  • Fresh or frozen fruit of any kind, yogurt – Greek or regular, 100% fruit juice, granola or oatmeal to sprinkle on top

Mix ingredients in a blender and away they go to class with a belly full of goodness!

    I love the suggestion but with lactose intolerance, several fruit allergies, egg allergies and nut allergies, many suggestions are not feasible for our school. There are others pending also. We need a very basic menu anymore. It takes lots of planning and time.

    1. Hi Ruth, As a Dietitian I can certainly understand your frustration with allergies. As you are likely aware there are certainly different options for allergy substitutions.My suggestion is usually to stick to the whole foods you know absolutely wouldn’t have certain ingredients in them. For lactose intolerance – having lacteeze milk on hand for these particular children, choosing only those fruits that are allowed, and of coarse avoiding products that have egg or nut ingredients. Usually chatting with the kids specifically with these allergies can open up plenty of ideas as to what can be served to them – kids with such specific allergies are usually well educated in what they can and cannot eat.
